Miller Properties started in 1988 when my restless and entrepreneurial father saw an ad in The Wall Street Journal suggesting investing in Austin. My sweet parents, Jerry and Dr. Erica Miller, took a chance in the small but growing city, and purchased a 12-unit building for half the price of the 4-unit apartment building they had recently inherited from my maternal grandparents in Los Angeles.
Initially, Jerry thought the deal was too good to be true and didn't want to take the risk, especially as an out-of-state owner. However, my tenacious mother, who survived the Holocaust, fought in the Israeli Air Force, and immigrated to the US to pursue the American Dream, asserted the inheritance was from her parents and said, "If you (Jerry) won't take the risk, then I will!"
While Jerry worked closely to oversee property management and help establish Austin as a second home, Erica (who earned a PhD in clinical psychology) founded several clinics in California that helped rehabilitate first-time offenders of alcohol, drug and domestic violence abuse. With their efforts combined, my parents set an inspiring precedent for the next generation of Millers to provide housing in Austin. We've come to love the city, our tenants, and the community we've help nurture for two generations.
Considering the state capitol, The University of Texas, and the disaster-free weather coupled with the overall vibe and energy of the city, my mother (the bold Romanian immigrant) and our dedicated father could easily envision the growth of Austin. Years after my parents' 1988 purchase of Westwood Place on 34th Street, our family now owns 12 apartment buildings (276 units) throughout Austin.
My parents loved the city and bought a condo to make Austin their (and now my) second home. By 2008, we outgrew outside management companies and established our own: Miller Properties at Popolo Village. This allowed our family to fully implement our unique family-owned, at home feel while still maintaining our professionalism and structure.
My wonderful father passed away on March 3, 2013. Miller Properties was his love, passion, and child. My mom continues to oversee management, direct decision-making, and live the American dream as matriarch of the Millers and Miller Properties.
I stepped in over the past few years to help my mother manage, market, and oversee Miller Properties. My brother, John, has also been involved in helping with renovations and management. We hope you enjoy and truly feel at home living in our properties. Please feel free to share stories with us. We love to hear how Miller Properties has become your home too!
